Skin Peels

Would you like to refresh the look of your skin without the need for surgery or needles? Do you have sun damaged, uneven skin or have you noticed darker patches- possibly as a result of recent hormonal changes?

If so a TCA chemical peel could be the way for you to regain beautiful, fresh looking skin with an even tone and texture.

TCA peels are great for improving the look of skin – removing sun spots and freckles that build up overtime. They can also be used to reduce fine lines, to help with severe acne and improve the look of melasma which can be caused by factors such as pregnancy, stress and medication.

The chemicals used in TCA peels are non-toxic and have been used safely for over 20 years. With newer types of product on the market and increased knowledge and skill in their application, chemical peels have significantly increased in popularity in recent years.

TCA peels work by drying the top layer of the dermis causing it to peel away revealing a new layer of skin underneath.

When performed correctly by a qualified and experience professional TCA peels have proven successful and effective with the procedure encouraging new cell growth and the natural re-generation of smooth, healthy skin.

Priory Dental Clinic are proud to offer TCA skin peels in Kenilworth. We also see patients from Coventry and the surrounding area, so get it touch for an appointment!

WHAT TYPE OF PEEL SHOULD I HAVE?

There are different types of peel available depending on the condition of your skin and the results you desire.

A light peel will help to brighten and refresh the skin giving an improved tone and even colouring.

Medium peels penetrate the dermis slightly further to improve more moderate sun damage and wrinkles.

Deep peels (which are less commonly used) improve deeper wrinkling and more severe facial damage. Often several lighter treatments carried out at regular intervals can have a significant effect so are usually recommended in place of a deep peel which carries increased risk of scarring and can be more painful during recovery.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY TCA TREATMENT?

Once you are comfortable in the surgery, your skin will be well cleaned to make sure any make up, dirt and oils are removed. Eye protectors will be placed and the peel will be applied and left for between 10 and 30 minutes. It will feel hot and may sting a little. This is quite normal. Following the peel, an ointment will be applied to help heal the skin.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL I SEE A DIFFERENCE?

You will notice the results as soon as your skin has finished peeling. This is normally around a week later.

Initially when you leave the practice your skin will appear slightly yellow and may swell slightly. It will turn redder and feel tight over the following days – although you shouldn’t experience any pain.

Peeling generally starts around 3 days after the procedure and can continue for up to 5 days. Whilst the skin will look significantly fresher and brighter by this point you could continue to see an improvement for up to 60 days afterwards.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN FOLLOWING A TCA PEEL.

The care required following your procedure will depend on the type of peel you have had and the depth it penetrates into your skin. You will be given advice and creams as required when you leave the surgery.  It’s important to follow any instructions carefully to avoid scarring.

Make up should be avoided and you should clean your skin gently on a daily basis – moisturising it well to hydrate it.

It’s important to avoid the sun for at least month as your skin will be more sensitive and prone to burning. Keep your face covered with a hat and sunglasses and wear high factor sun lotion on a daily basis.

You should also avoid smoking as this will prevent good circulation to the skin lengthening your recovery time.

HOW LONG WITH MY TCA PEEL LAST?

Again, this will depend on the type of peel you are having and the depth of penetration. Some results are permanent while others can last from a few months up to 2 years.

IS A TCA PEEL SUITABLE FOR ME?

This type of chemical peel is generally suitable for a number of patients who would like to improve the look of sun damaged skin and fine wrinkles or who suffer with melasma or severe acne. It is certainly not for everyone though and will depend on your general health and medical history.

The use of certain prescription supplied acne medications (such as Accutane) may also prevent treatment. Likewise if you have large scars or skin infections a peel will not be suitable. We can fully advise you at your consultation.

If you are looking to undergo a chemical peel you should be willing to put in the after-care to ensure your skin recovers well.
